KinderParking Implementation Recommendations
How many spaces should we have?
-
We recommend aiming for at least as many KinderParking
spaces as you have handicapped spaces - guidelines are different in each
state, but generally that's in the order of 1 space per 25 available spaces.
-
Some retail locations
can make wise use of more KinderParking spaces (such as craft stores, general department/discounter stores) to
encourage this segment of the buying public.
-
Some facilities can use fewer (such as hospitals,
pediatricians, libraries), where the family demographic is either very
dominant or very insignificant.
-
Aim to accommodate and encourage but don’t
alienate your other clients – if they have to drive past two-thirds of
the lot to park, they’ll shop your competitors where they can park close-by!
Where should they be?
-
Similar to handicapped space guidelines, KinderParking
spaces should be close to
building entrances, ideally next to walkways
-
In addition, if you can provide spaces that are wider
than the average/minimum space – again, closer to the size of handicapped spots –
that additional space allows families easy access with strollers, space to remove carrier seats,
extra room for small kids to fling open
doors without damaging neighboring vehicles! |
